4. Safety

The amount of radiation the body is exposed to per year in the natural environment, according to data issued in March 1989 by the Atomic Energy Bureau, the Science and Technology Agency, is

- Cosmic radiation 0.35m Sv
- Terrestrial radiation 0.4m Sv
- Food radiation 0.35m Sv

which make up a total sum of 1.10m Sv. The radiation from Kayacera Powder is less than 1.0m Sv per year, which is below both the standard of the Laws Concerning the Prevention of Radiation Hazards from Radioisotopes and Others (amended in 1989) and recommendations by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). The figure, with regard to 0.6m Sv (effective dose equivalent) from an X-ray examination, is a level that is deemed sufficiently safe. The radioactivity of Kayacera raw material has been adjusted to secure safety to 330Bq/g (figure by Japan Chemical Analysis Center) or below the standard 370Bq/g, use below which requires no notification to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Bq (Becquerel); a unit of measuring radioactivity). Kayacera therefore doesn't present any safety question no matter how long it is stored. However, we cannot emphasize the dangerous nature of radiation enough. Yet, on the other hand, there have been reports that low-level radiation may promote growth, extend life and help maintain good health. Mineral water from hot springs used for bathing and even drinking is an example. This is called radiation hormesis, which was reported in 1980 by Prof. T. D. Luckey, the University of Missouri, and has recently become more widely known through television reports. The raw material of Kayacera, having similar characteristics to mineral ores from hot springs, is free of safety problems.
