Toray to open "Automotive Center" in Nagoya Plant as core foothold to develop technology for automobile parts made of carbon fibers

Toray announced on October 9 that it would convert its Nagoya Plant into core factory for "automobiles and aircraft" field. As the initial step, with an investment of about 2.5 billion yen, it will establish the "Automotive Center" as core foothold to develop technology for automobiles parts made of carbon fibers in June 2008, and promote development of advanced materials including carbon fibers and technology, aiming to raise its automobile industry-related sales to 350 billion yen in fiscal year 2015 from 124 billion yen in fiscal year 2006.

Following this, the company is planning to newly establish "Advanced composite center (tentative name)" by shifting composites (carbon fiber composite material molding) technology development functions of Ehime Plant (Masaki-cho, Ehime) and Shiga Plant (Otsu, Shiga) to consolidate it as a comprehensive technology development center (A&A center) for the automobile and aviation industries with existing "Resin Development Center." It will conduct a review of manufacturing function at the same time to straighten production system for plastics, composites and high functional chemicals for automobiles and aircraft. The company plans to spend a total of about 20 billion yen by 2010 to complete the structural improvement of Nagoya Plant.
