The General Administration of Sport of China and Shanghai Apparel Research Institute have approved the "standardized criteria for apparel" which sets the standards of high functional sportswear. These quality standards are scheduled to be effective from 2008. With this enforcement, companies will be obliged to meet certain standards for product quality. Major sportswear brands should be capable of meeting the standards, but small and medium-sized enterprises which have remained viable in the market by limiting profits are expected to face business difficulties due to cost increases for meeting the standards.
