Global production and sales of organic cotton increase

Global production and sales of organic cotton are expanding globally.
According to "Organic Farm and Fiber Report 2007" by Organic Exchange
(non-profit organization based in Berkley, California, US), the amount of organic
cotton produced in 2006/07 was 57,931 tons (= 265,517 bales), up 53% from the
previous year. It is produced in 24 countries, and 44.9% of the organic cotton
was grown in three Middle East countries (Turkey, Syria and Israel), while 32.9%
of organic cotton was grown in South Asia (India and Pakistan). The report says
organic cotton production will likely increase from 25 to 55% in the next fiscal
year compared to this fiscal year.
According to "Spring 2006 Global Organic Cotton Market Report" (published
by the Organic Exchange), organic cotton sales increased from $245 million in
2001 to $583 million in 2005. They are expected to skyrocket to $2.6 billion
by the end of 2008.
The major users of organic cotton in 2005 were Nike, Coop Switzerland, Patagonia,
Otto of Germany, Sam's Club and Wal-mart. |
