Sakai Ovex acquires molding technology and machines for carbon fiber (CF) and establishes vertical production system of CF from opening to final product
Cage System® molding machine

Sakai Ovex has introduced the patented technology, Cage System® from Roc Tool, France and molding machines for vertical production of CF fromteasing(opening) to the final product. Cage System® uses an induction heating system and is suitable for molding thermoplastic or thermosetting resins with composite materials.

By acquiring this license, Sakai Ovex obtained a “through manufacturing system” for CF products-teasing(opening,) weaving, impregnation and molding- and plans to develop articles for industrial and technical textile materials, such as for IT equipment, automobiles and the air and space industries.

Sakai Ovex explained the historical background of the introduction and characteristics of this system.

▽Historical background

Sakai Ovex planned a vertical production of CF articles from opening to the final products and their business. They receive permission to use the teasing (opening) patent of CF from FukuiPrefecture and got a co-patent on weaving with FukuiPrefecture.

The main manufacturing stages are teasing(opening,) weaving, impregnation and molding. At present CF related companies are envisaging an improvement of the impregnation and molding stages. Sakai Ovex also collected the related information and conducted many trials, and met Roc Tool (Bourget du Lac, Lyon) at the Lyon/Fukui Local to Local industrial interchange program, three years ago. Then, they exchanged information with each other on molding technology, and Sakai Ovex decided to acquire the license for rapid molding technology,Cage System®, and purchased the molding machine.

Sakai Ovex had already established the technology for manufacturing a multi-axial layered sheet and preform and installed the apparatus for the production.

1. Characteristics

Cage System® is patented technology owned by Roc Tool. This technology uses induction heating and is suitable for molding thermoplastic or thermosetting resins with composite materials.

The major characteristics are as follows:

2. Induction heating system with energy saving

This system heats only the surface of the metal mold, leading to energy saving, whereas conventional ones heat almost the whole of the metal mold.

3. Short molding cycle time

The heating and cooling times can be shortened, leading to remarkable savings in molding cycle time, because of localized heating.

4. Strict temperature control

This system is suitable for molding thermosetting materials because the operating temperature can be strictly controlled.

5. Pre-heating is not required

This system is suitable for molding thermoplastic materials because no pre-heating of the preform (composite fabric materials or composite chopped materials) is required.
