Toray to expand advanced materials for textile business

President
Mr. Sadayuki Sakakibara
Vice president
Mr. Yukihiro Sugimoto

Toray's president, Mr. Sadayuki Sakakibara, and the vice president, Mr. Yukihiro Sugimoto, held a press conference at the headquarters in Osaka on May 22, and announced the progress of its Mid-term Business Strategy "IT-2010" and the future direction of its textile business. Toray president, Mr. Sakakibara, presented a vision of achieving its goal which is 1,800 billion yen in consolidated net sales and 150 billion yen in consolidated operating prpfit by around 2010, saying, "It will have to be delayed slightly. It must be pushed back a couple of years," due to the worsening economic climate caused by rising crude oil prices and a downturn in the global economy. However, the company will still invest in facilities as scheduled, and, from fiscal 2009, turn around the information-communication material and carbon fiber businesses which lead Toray's business achievement.

For the textile business to reach 600 billion yen in sales and 30 billion yen in operating profits by around 2010, "the company needs to expand foreign operations, including apparel, as well as advanced material business such as nanotechnology, polylactate and high-function fiber," and "operating profits of 30 billion yen will come into view by raising the proportion of advanced materials in Toray's fiber business from over 32% of operating profits in fiscal 2007 to 50% of operating profits," said the vice president, Mr. Yukihiro Sugimoto.
