EURATEX to refute Doha Round chairman's revised text |
|
The chairman's revised text on Non-Agricultural Market Access (NAMA) tariff cuts in the Doha Round of WTO was published on May 20. According to this text, the tariff cuts in the Doha Round including textile products will be determined by a calculating formula and its coefficient differs from industrial countries (between 7 and 9) to developing countries (3 ways between 19 and 26). With this tariff reduction, the gap between industrial countries and developing countries can be admitted and a certain degree of flexibility on the reduction for developing countries would potentially be allowed.
In response to this, the European Apparel and Textile Organization (EURATEX) has expressed its strong opposition to this revised text at the annual meeting on May 30, saying it is unacceptable for the European textile industry because high tariffs still remain for developing countries and it is required to eliminate non-tariff barriers, from the position of focusing on the market development of third countries in WTO Doha Round Negotiation. |
