Cytec of US to expand carbon fiber plant

The US’ carbon fiber manufacturer, Cytec Industries Inc. has been constructing a carbon fiber manufacturing plant in Greenville in South Carolina. It aims to start operation from early 2010.

With an investment of $200 to $250 million for the first-phase, the company is aiming at capacity expansion for PAN precursor and fiber carbonization to intensify production capability to meet the growing demand for next-generation carbon fibers.

Cytec has a PAN-based carbon fiber plan with an annual capacity of 1,900 tons as well as a plant for pitch-based carbon fiber with an annual capacity of 230 tons which is distributed under the “THORNEL” brand.

Note: 1) PAN-based carbon fiber is produced by carbonizing PAN precursor (polyacrylonitrile fiber), and it has high strength and elasticity. It is used in a wide variety of applications such as structural materials for aerospace, industrial areas and sports/leisure areas.
2) Pitch-based carbon fiber is produced by carbonizing pitch precursor (pitch fiber made from coal tar and heavy oil components), and depending on the manufacturing conditions, it can have a wide range of characteristics from low elasticity to super high elasticity and strength. The products with super high elasticity are used for various applications using its excellent heat conducting and electro-conductive properties, as well as high rigidity applications.
