Special flame retardants
(non-halogen, non-antimony)
- Multi-purpose type -
∇Fran EG series

Flame-proof property testing machine |
Daiwa Chemical Industries has a line-up of seven items in the Fran EG series compatible with various uses (UL standards, building materials, car and aeroplane upholstery, soft furnishings); three powder types, Fran EG-11, 15 and 18, two water-dispersion types, Fran EG-50 and 80, and two types of standardized aqueous acrylic resin emulsion, Fran EG-50BK and 80BK. All seven of these items are environmentally-conscious, non-halogen, non-antimony types.
Each item of the Fran EG series contains special flame-retardant compounds, which, with the application of heat, form a solid flame-proof layer that prevents the progress of combustion. Flame-retardant effects can therefore be expected on substrates that have a tendency towards carbonizing.
The powder types, Fran EG-11, 15 and 18, can be used in a mix with acrylic resins and various other resins of both aqueous and solvent types.
The following are an image and a photograph of Fran EG-finished goods under flame (Vertical Burn Test).

Conventional flame-retardant finish |

Fran EG finish |

The marked part is a flame-proof layer, formed with the application of heat |
| Because of a flame-proof layer formed with the application of heat, the progress of combustion can be prevented in Fran EG-finished goods, and even in materials for which conventional flame-proof finishing methods have proven ineffective. |
|
The following are details of each item in Fran EG series.
∇Fran EG-11, for use in mix with resin
Features
| • |
A non-halogen type that does not generate harmful gasses (hydrogen halide, dioxins) when put under flame |
| • |
An environmentally-conscious flame retardant with no antimony or formalin content (phosphorus type) |
| • |
A fire-proof layer formed with the application of heat prevents the progress of combustion |
| • |
Recipes compatible with the UL94V-0 standards are possible with incorporation into resins such as PP, PE, ABS, ABS/wood powder |
Characteristics
| Appearance: |
Ash-gray powder |
| Concentration: |
More than 99% |
| Components: |
Special phosphate/nitrogen compounds, inorganic compounds |
Example of use
A plate was produced using a mix of 70% polypropylene resin and 30% Fran EG-11.
(Double-axes extruder → injection molding machine)
Results
Passed UL94V-0 standards (2.5mm-thick). The following table shows more results.

Notes
| • |
As degradation in the size of flame-retardant particles in mixing with resin will result in performance deterioration, research into methods that cause minimal fracture is necessary. |
| • |
Spinning is not possible as it contains 300µm-size particles. |
| • |
Care is required as volume increases when temperature is above 250°C (the use of PET, nylon and PC can be restricted because of the requirement of a high processing temperature). |
| • |
Thorough preliminary testing is necessary as the amount used differs according to the degree of flame-retardant effect required. |

∇Fran EG-15, for use in mix with solvent-type resin
Fran EG-15 prevents the progress of combustion in the early stages with a flame-proof layer formed through the application of heat.
Features
| • |
It has good dispersing properties in various organic solvents including ethyl acetate |
| • |
A new-type flame retardant which shows concern for the environment. Being a non-formalin type, it produces no dioxins when put under flame. It contains no antimony, either. |
| • |
Effective in use with a wide range of resins; a non-dripping type |
Characteristics
| Active constituent: |
Special flame-retardant compounds (phosphorous) |
| Appearance: |
Ash-gray powder |
| Particle size: |

Application
For the addition of flame-retardant properties to solvent-type resins, adhesives and polymers
Example of use
Add Fran EG-15 to resin, mix well and adjust viscosity using solvent before application on substrate. The following is an example of application.
