Question & Answer

Non-tension is ideal

Q: Can you expect a high luster if the hank is mercerized and rinsed under non-tension conditions?

A:

No problem. The difference of the rotation speed between upper rollers and lower rollers can give moderate tension and then moderate luster.

J T Marsh, a researcher into the mercerization of cotton, stated that the luster increases according to the following steps; first, cotton is swollen by caustic soda, the cross section becomes circular, it becomes more circular by extension then a smooth surface and luster are attained.

This operation can be carried out by tensioning after adequate swelling under free tension.

Hank mercerization can give moderate luster, and excess tension like continuous fabric mercerization may produce unbalanced effects.

Hank mercerization is carried out in a limited operation range of free tension, which gives good overall effects, and this principle must always be kept in mind.

Q:

Does that mean that you should not abuse the tensioning although we can give tension to the hank?

A:

Yes. An excellent mercerizing effect can be achieved if you carry out the operation as programmed, which consists of feeding alkali liquor, transferring the hank by roller, moderate tensioning and automatic rinsing data based on our long-term experience.
