Question & Answer

Dyeing with reduced alkali

Q: What is the advantage of hank mercerization?

A:

There are five advantages;

(1)Improving the dyeability of cotton, especially for deep dyeing
(2)Giving high hygroscopic property(moisture content)
(3)Giving high tenacity
(4)Giving high bulkiness
(5)Giving high luster

Q:

I understand the importance of the balance between these advantages, for example, high tension cannot produce stretchable cotton. So, could you explain about the increase of dyeability?

A:

Dr. Imada, a specialist in dyeing technology, mentioned that the amount of alkali required for reactive dyeing is usually larger in practice than the standard to keep the cotton pH stable.

However, the alkali requirement becomes smaller in mercerized cotton because the pH of mercerized cotton is stable on the alkali side.

For example, mercerized cotton requires 15g/l soda ash, although for unmercerized cotton it is 20g/l. Further, higher color yield can be obtained in mercerized cotton.

To this purpose, Nishinakajima Precision Machinery can supply (1)a caustic soda temperature control unit, (2)a caustic soda Baume adjuster and (3)a penetrant dosage pump.
